Vega
Spanish for tobacco field or tobacco estate — the plantation together with its drying barns.
In Cuba the vega denotes the tobacco estate as a whole: the fields, the drying barns, and the family that works them — the grower himself is called a veguero. Celebrated vegas of the Vuelta Abajo have made history: on the Vega El Corojo in the 1930s, the Corojo tobacco variety was selected, which supplied Cuba’s classic wrapper leaf. The reputation of a vega plays a decisive part in which factories secure its harvest.
