Retrohaling

The slow release of a portion of smoke through the nose — without inhaling.

In retrohaling you allow a small part of the smoke from the mouth to exit slowly through the nose. The receptors there differentiate more finely than the palate and open up facets of the bouquet that the mouth alone cannot perceive. For beginners a mild cigar and a small volume of smoke are recommended — at first there is a slight burning sensation in the nose. Retrohaling is not obligatory, but it is a door to a wider aromatic world.
