Habano

The protected designation for cigars made entirely in Cuba from Cuban tobacco.

Habano (plural: Habanos) is a protected designation of origin, comparable to appellation protections in wine: it applies only to cigars produced in Cuba from Cuban tobacco according to defined standards. For over a century the Habano was synonymous with the premium cigar par excellence; owing to the US embargo it remains absent from the American market to this day. On the rest of the world market it remains the historical reference against which producers from the New World measure themselves.
