Six Beginner Mistakes — and How to Avoid Them

Beginner · 2 min read

Mistakes come with the beginning — but most of them have been the same for generations. Knowing them before they happen saves you ruined cigars and more than one ruined evening.

Too Strong, Too Fast

Mistake one: starting with a full-bodied cigar. Strength means nicotine effect, and that is regularly underestimated — on an empty stomach in particular, it can trigger dizziness and nausea. Start mild, eat something beforehand, and work your way up over months, not days. Mistake two: smoking too quickly. A hurried draw rhythm overheats the cherry and turns the smoke bitter; the cigar rewards patience, not speed.

Cutting and Lighting

Mistake three: the wrong cut. Anyone who cuts too deep below the shoulder opens up the construction — the wrapper comes loose and the cigar literally falls apart. All that is needed is a clean, modest opening at the head. Mistake four: the wrong end. The foot — the open end — is lit; the head, the closed, rounded side, is cut. That sounds obvious, but it happens — and a cigar lit at the head cannot be rescued.

Stored Incorrectly

Mistake five concerns the time between purchase and pleasure. In dry room air, a cigar loses noticeable aroma within days and burns sharply later; stored too moist, the draw becomes laboured and the burn uneven. An expensive cabinet is not required, but a regulated climate is — even a sealed box with a humidifier pack does the job. Anyone who regularly keeps more than a handful of cigars at home cannot avoid this minimum.

The Frustration Purchase

Mistake six is buying without advice: some resonant name taken from the shelf of a shop that knows little about cigars — and the disappointment that follows is blamed on the entire world of cigars. Go to a specialist retailer and say honestly that you are just starting out. A well-advised first cigar often decides whether there is ever a second one.
