Plasencia
Few families have shaped the cigar world as profoundly as the Plasencias — and remained so invisible for so long. The story begins in 1865, when Eduardo Plasencia emigrated from the Canary Islands to Cuba and began growing tobacco. After the Revolution the family left the island and rebuilt in Nicaragua and Honduras; under Nestor Plasencia this grew into one of the largest tobacco producers in the world.
For decades Plasencia was the power behind the scenes: the family’s Vegas supply countless brands, and millions of cigars per year were produced in the house’s factories — under other people’s names. Other rising names also began here: the Oliva Cigar Co., for instance, had its first cigars made in a Plasencia factory.
It was not until 2016/17 that the family stepped into the spotlight with a brand of their own. The Plasencia 1865 range, named after the founding year of the family tradition, opened with the Alma Fuerte — a Puro of purely Nicaraguan tobacco, whose Ligada was developed by five blenders around Nestor Plasencia Sr. and Jr. The Alma series has since grown into a brand world of its own; its ambition is the same that has sustained the family for five generations: those who control the tobacco from seed onwards no longer need to hide behind any other name.
