Ecuador

Ecuador has almost no cigar brands of international standing — and yet it is indispensable to the craft of any serious collection. The reason is that a large proportion of the premium cigars smoked around the world today carry a wrapper from Ecuador. No other country has specialised so consistently in the outermost leaf.

Terroir and Regions

The secret lies in the sky. Over the growing areas of the western lowlands, above all in the province of Los Ríos around Quevedo, a solid natural cloud cover hangs for much of the year. It filters the sunlight without removing it — and thereby achieves naturally what elsewhere requires elaborate shade cloth stretched over the fields. Beneath this gentle light, thin, silky, evenly coloured leaves with a fine texture come to maturity: precisely the qualities a wrapper requires. Volcanic soils and a warm, humid climate do the rest.

Wrappers for the World

On this foundation, Ecuador cultivates the great wrapper traditions in abundance. Ecuador Connecticut, grown from the seed of the famous US shade tobacco, yields bright, creamy wrappers — usually somewhat more aromatic than the North American original. Ecuador Habano, tracing its lineage to Cuban seed, represents the spicier, darker side and is among the most widely used wrappers in the New World. Sumatra varieties with their sweet, earthy note complete the range. Manufactories from Nicaragua to the Dominican Republic source their wrappers from these fields; many of the most celebrated cigars of the present day would be inconceivable without Ecuadorian leaf.

So Ecuador has become the quiet giant of the trade: a country whose name rarely appears prominently on the box, yet whose signature rests on the cigar itself — the first thing the hand touches, and the first thing the eye sees.
