For decades the Dominican Republic was the largest exporter of handmade premium cigars — and even though Nicaragua has now challenged its position on the US market, it remains one of the central pillars of the cigar world. Its style has earned a name of its own: Dominican elegance.

Terroir and Regions

The heart of cultivation beats in the Cibao valley in the north of the country, around Santiago de los Caballeros. Fertile alluvial soils and a mild, balanced climate yield tobacco that favours finesse over force — aromatic, supple, with a bright spiciness. The most important varieties carry their origins in their names: Piloto Cubano, grown from Cuban seed, contributes the stronger, spicier note; Olor Dominicano, a native variety, adds aroma and body. Around Santiago and in towns such as Tamboril and Villa González, a concentration of manufactories has developed that is without equal anywhere in the world.

Houses and Craft

The great names of the country are also its history. Arturo Fuente, founded in Tampa in 1912, moved production to Santiago in 1980 and later proved with its own Dominican wrapper cultivation that the country is capable of far more than filler and binder. Davidoff has produced in the Dominican Republic since 1990, after the house parted ways with Cuba — a decision that definitively cemented the reputation of Dominican manufacturing. Alongside the international marques, family businesses shape the picture: Tabacalera William Ventura, run by William and Henderson Ventura, produces for the Swiss-Dominican brand ADVentura among others, and represents a new generation of Dominican manufactories developing their own signatures.
